Setup
Setting up Howl is quick and easy. There are two components which allow Howl to do its job: the iPhone application and a plugin for Growl which forwards notifications to your phone.
After registering for an account on your iPhone™, download the Growl plugin.

If you don't already have Growl installed, download it, install it, and meet back here. We'll wait for you.
OK. Back to Howl. Double click Howl.growlView to install the plugin. When prompted, choose to configure the plugin.
In the Growl Preference Pane, select Howl from the display styles list. Enter the username and password you used on the iPhone and check your account credentials to make sure everything is correct. Finally, click Preview to get your first notification forwarded to your phone.

If you want to get all of your alerts on your phone, select Howl as the default style near the top of display options.
Below you'll find more information about how you can turn Howl off for certain notifications or periods and other settings.
Settings
Howl is designed to be flexible so the Growl plugin contains several settings to help you get the notifications you want when you want them.
Forwarding Notifications
When using Howl you can still get all of your notifications on your computer using the same display style use used previously. By default, Howl will keep forwarding all of your notifications to your previous display style.
Only Send When Idle
If you're using your computer where you can see notifications as they come in, you may not want notifications going to your phone as well. If no activity has been detected for the interval specified, notifications will start getting sent to your phone.
Don't Send at Certain Times
You may not want to get notified at night or during another recurring time period. Using the suppress notifications setting you can specify a period of time when notifications won't be sent to your phone.
Don't Send When Connected
If you're iPhone™ is connected to your computer, you may not want to receive notifications. This setting does exactly that.
Getting Fancy
Certain programs will send notifications that may not be useful to get on your phone. With Howl you have two options:
- Turn off Howl for noisy applications
- Only use Howl for interesting applications
Turning off Howl for Noisy Applications
When you want to turn off Howl notifications for a particular application, first go to the Applications tab in the Growl Preference Pane.

Next, choose the application you want to modify and click Configure.
In the Application Settings tab, select a different display style for the application.

If you only have a few applications you don't want to receive notifications for, this is an excellent way to turn those notifications off.
Only use Howl for Interesting Applications
You many only be interesting in getting Howl notifications for one or two important applications. Howl supports that, too!
In the Display Options tab of the Growl Preference pane, select a Default Display other than Howl.
Next, choose the application you want to modify and click Configure.
In the Application Settings tab, select a Howl as the Application Display Style.
Now sit back and relax while only the applications you're interested in let you know what's going on wherever you are.
